How I Broke Free from a Decade-Long Struggle with UTIs

Hi, I’m Kayo from Kayzen Wellness!

My journey with UTIs began when I was 16, and it’s been a challenging road ever since, spanning over a decade. That first twinge of discomfort led to a diagnosis that became all too familiar over the years. Initially, natural remedies worked, but as I grew older, UTIs became a regular and frustrating part of my life, especially during my university years.

​

Things became particularly difficult when, at 21, I experienced seven UTIs in a single year, with some even developing into excruciating kidney infections. After a frightening trip to A&E around Christmas, where I learned about the damage these infections and repeated antibiotic use were causing to my bladder, I knew I had to find a better way.

​

Determined to break free from this painful cycle and conventional treatments like antibiotics, I delved into research, aiming to heal my body naturally. It wasn’t easy—I faced setbacks, but after a lot of trial and error, I finally made progress.

As of 2024, I’ve been UTI-free for over a year and want to share everything I’ve learned with others who are struggling too. My hope is to empower you to find long-term relief without the mistakes, time, and effort I had to invest in research and experimentation.

Why Antibiotics Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

When you get a UTI, the usual response is to visit the doctor, who prescribes antibiotics. While these can clear the infection, they might not be as beneficial as they seem and could even cause more harm.

 

A recent study by Washington University found that while antibiotics can eliminate harmful bacteria from the bladder, they often leave the bacteria causing such infections in the gut untouched. This means the bacteria can migrate back to the bladder, leading to more infections. Additionally, antibiotics disrupt your gut microbiome, reducing beneficial bacteria that help control inflammation, making you more vulnerable to another UTI.

 

The study also showed that women with recurrent UTIs tend to have less diverse gut bacteria and often lack those that help manage inflammation. This chronic inflammation is linked to repeated infections.

 

The key takeaway? Your gut health, inflammation, and UTIs are all connected, and antibiotics can worsen this cycle. Unfortunately, there is still a HUGE gap between the Western medical approach to UTIs and a holistic approach to finding long-term relief.

Preventing bacteria from entering in the first place is crucial. This approach can help your body naturally fight off bacteria, reducing the risk of future infections.
